Eagle Scout Requirement #4: Leadership

Return to Eagle Tips List

The Life Scout's leadership is an important element in the advancement to the Eagle Scout rank. This is an opportunity for the scout to use the skills he has acquired from his Tenderfoot through Star ranks. The requirements are listed on the Eagle Scout Rank Application and in the Scout's handbook. Watch for these items as the Scout completed his Eagle Scout Rank Application.

  1. "While a Life  Scout..." Dates listed should begin on or after the Life Scout date. If a scout is begins a leadership position prior to his Life Scout date, he should list the first date of the leadership position as of the Life Scout date. The Scout may need to list a second position to meet the six month requirement.
  2. Leadership positions that qualify for the Life to Eagle rank are listed on the current application.
  3. Bugler and Assistant patrol leader positions do not qualify for the Life to Eagle leadership requirement.
  4. Two new leadership positions were added with an effective date of 1/1/10. Leave No Trace Trainer and Webmaster.
  5.  Do no list future dates on the application. A Scout has not served this time yet.
  6.  Dates must be listed in the boxes on the application. Using the words "present, still serving, ongoing, etc..." or leaving the box empty is not allowed.
  7. You may list more than one position on the form
  8. You may list more than 6 months of leadership
  9. The requirement is 6 months of leadership. Calendar dates apply, for example: from 1/1/10 to 6/30/10.

Remember, do not use an out of date application! The current Eagle Scout Rank Application and Eagle Scout Leadership Service Workbook are found on the council website. They are fillable forms that can be downloaded, saved and updated as needed. (The national office is no longer printing Eagle Scout Rank Applications of Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project Workbooks.) For additional information, contact your district advancement chair or Eagle Scout coordinator, and attend a district Eagle Preview or Eagle Expo.
