Scout Expo 2008, “Life Skills”

One of District's first big events is taking place Feb 23; the Scout Expo. This event is an opportunity for families around the communities of the Northern Lights District to experience what Packs, Troops, Venture Crews and Explorers do in association with the Boy Scouts of America. It is a great opportunity not just for the community, but for the extended families of the Scouts as well. The Scout Expo will be fun and lively, with many district and Council exhibits. It is taking place at the Brookdale Center from 10 AM TO 8 PM. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Dave Braun at dave@dbraun99.com. Come out and enjoy the Expo!

Friends of Scouting Want Ads: "We still need Presenters"

he 2008 Friends of Scouting campaign is off to a great start. Our district goal is $100,000. Although we have the most of our units sign-up for their presentation, we need our District help in presenting them. If you know of past Committee Chairs, Eagle Scouts, Eagle Scouts parents, retired Cub Masters or Scout Masters that can present a story related to Friends of Scouting, kindly forward their information to our Family Friend of Scouting Chair, John Cushen at 612-747-6329, or Johnny Allen Jr at 763-231-7227.

District Dinner

The annual District Dinner will be held Tuesday, February 12, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 8701 36th Ave. N., New Hope, MN. The theme for this year's dinner will be "An Honestly Good Time" All Scouting volunteers in the District are encouraged to attend. It is an evening to recognize our fellow Scouting volunteers through awards, enjoy good food and fellowship, and celebrate President Lincoln's Birthday! The District Award of Merit as well as other awards will be presented. Please make advance reservations by mailing a check (along with the registration form), to Northern Star Council, BSA., 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley, MN 55422. PLEASE INDICATE "Northern Lights District Dinner" on the envelope. The cost is $15 if paid prior to February 8, 2007 and $20 thereafter.

Merit Badge Madness

Due to the events of some Scouts last year at Merit Badge Madness at Hennepin Technical College, and the time constrains in securing a new location, plus forming a staff and promotional materials, we are not be able to offer Merit Badge Madness this year. We as a District will continue to look for locations for the 2009 Merit Badge Madness and continue to provide a quality program. For any questions, please contact Joyce Wilson at 612-521-0629.

Unit Re-Chartering

February is Re-Charter month for Packs. By now you should have re­ceived your access code for the online recharter process from your Unit Com­missioner. After completing the online process print your recharter documents, get the appropriate signatures, and give the forms, along with your payment, to the West Council office, 5300 Glen­wood Ave., Golden Valley, MN 55422. Please turn these in by March 1, 2007. If you have not yet gotten this information, or have questions about the re­charter process, please call John Olson, District Commissioner, at 763-557­1978.

Cub Scout Ice Fishing Derby, "The Cold One"

What a day! Not only did at least 27 Scouts and family members show up, they came and fish on one of the coldest days of the year. The true meanings of a Scout being prepare. Mr. Frank Malone was great with organizing the event and being prepare himself as he had warming spots for the boys and their families. This was the first derby in three years and everyone enjoyed. Every boy received door prizes and almost 50 fish were caught. We even had a 2 1/2 Ib Northern take pictures with a young scout. Thanks again to Frank Malone and his volunteers in running this event.

District Pinewood Derby

Along with the Scout Expo that is taking place on Feb 23, the annual Pinewood Derby will be zooming along as well. The Pinewood Derby is the highlight of many memories for both Cubs and their adult partners. Every thing will begin at 12:15 pm and last till 4:00 p.m. As a reminder, we are following the Council Pinewood Derby rules. The cost will be $3.00 to cover the awards.
