 Northern
Lights District
Attention all Scout Leaders
In 2009, New Leaders Essentials training
has been replaced with “This Is Scouting” If you have already taken New Leaders
Essentials training you do not have to take This Is Scouting. Although you may
want to take it to refresh your memory! As it was with New Leaders Essentials,
new leaders will have to take This Is Scouting only once. This Is
Scouting is a 45 minute online course that should be taken right after a new
leader joins Scouting. The course is an introductory session that highlights the
values, aims, history, funding and methods of Scouting. It addresses how these
are met in each of the Scouting programs.
The
requirements for all adult Scout Leaders to
be fully trained are:
-
New Leaders
Essentials training Or This Is
Scouting – online training taken once
-
Fast Start
training for your position – Online
training taken each time you change
positions
-
Youth
Protection training – Online training
updated every two years
-
Position
Specific training – in person training
taken each time change positions
Note: The Northern Lights district Boy Scout Leader training
covers the Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster and all troop committee positions.
The Chartered Organization Representative is not a member of the committee so it
is not covered in the committee training. A separate Chartered Organization
Representative training course is
provided by our council.
Attention all Cub Scout
Leaders
In 2009, the
Cub Scout Leader Training format has changed
for all
new
Cub Scout Leaders.
Cub Scout Leader Position
Specific Training is now made up of three parts. All new leaders must
attend all 3 parts to fulfill requirement #4 stated above. Parts 1 &2 need to be
taken only once during the tenure of a Cub Scout Leader. Part 3 is taken each
time a leader changes their position. Leaders that have completed New Leaders
Essentials in the old format do not need to take parts 1 & 2.
Part 1. Introduction to Cub
Scouts. It’s a 45 minute introduction to the Cub Scout organization and the
essential elements of the Cub Scout program.
Part 2. How
We Have Fun. It’s a 45 minute session on
how Cub Scouts have fun in the den and the
pack
Part 3.
Position Specific Training. This is a
1-1/2 to 2 hour session that gets down to
the nuts and bolts for each individual Cub
Scout position and how to be a great Cub
Scout Leader!
